Croatian Association of Naïve Artists was founded in 1963 and our MirkoVirius Gallery was opened on Wednesday, 17th December 1986. We are situated at the heart of Zagreb’s pedestrian zone, in Tkalčićeva Street No. 14. The Gallery is located in the ground floor of a picturesque one-storey Baroque house (late 18th century). As seen from the street, the striking stone sculpture in front of the gallery windows is a work of one of our renowned naïve artists, Miroslav Župančić.

The Gallery has some 90 square metres of exhibition space. For over 30 years it has been cultivating art, staging first-rate exhibitions and organizing various art-related events.

The very name of MirkoVirius (Đelekovec, 1889 – Zemun, 1943), a peasant and a self-taught painter who had managed to create a series of historic art pieces in only three years of active painting, represents a symbol for the nature of the Gallery itself, whose main role is to cultivate and encourage self-taught visual art.

The Gallery is primarily an exhibition room for the Croatian Association of Naïve Artists, but has never been limited to the promotion of a single type of artistic expression or visual form. On the contrary, it has always represented an entire spectrum of visual expressions that grew out from a variety of backgrounds and traditions, from rural to urban, from the traditional to that departing from tradition, but still mostly self-taught and indigenous.

A considerable amount of effort has also been put into the presentation of new self-taught artists, of Croatian and international authors alike, through various forms of cultural cooperation and exchange. The Gallery is also a venue for various events such as the presentations of monographs by different authors, the presentations of graphic maps, graphic art and occasional concerts and recitals.

In addition to its regular exhibition programme, which is supported by the Zagreb City Office for Culture, Education and Sports and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia, the Gallery also sells art, so every day you can choose something from a range of works of authentic naïve art, with a certificate of ownership and membership in the Association.

We look forward to seeing you at the MirkoVirius Gallery, where our qualified and friendly staff will welcome you, instruct and advise you and help you select exactly what you expected and wanted to find, something for your own liking or for someone you hold particularly important.
